10 Ways to use a sheepskin in your everyday life from farmers who do

“So you tan hides? What do you do with them?”

Synthetic fabrics, while cheap to produce, have largely supplanted the products that were a natural part of the food cycle. Beautiful wool and sheepskins are treated as a byproduct of the meat industry, too often discarded as worthless. With the renewal of ecologically friendly tanning services comes the possibility of recovering this waste stream to a source of warmth and beauty in our homes and lives.

Besides the aesthetic beauty of our sheepskin products on rocking chairs, as a rest for your feet in a cozy spot or as a backdrop for your zoom meetings - there can be some practical ways to use sheepskins. In the winter I place a sheepskin underneath my sheets and the warmth that brings is so lovely each night. Both our boys and Javan slept on shearling sheepskins from a young age as a way of helping to maintain body warmth. In the hospital setting they are oftentimes used to help decrease bedsores and keep infants warm. They can be used in strollers or a cross-country ski trailer to keep warmth in under otherwise cold bottoms or block out wind and trap heat. Similarly they can be fastened to the outside of baby carriers to help preserve heat.
